Chinese Folk Band in the Midlands: Strings of Fate that Connect People through Music

Sometimes, life connects people in the most unexpected ways—like the gentle pull of strings guiding strangers to become friends. In the Midlands city of Leicester, a Chinese folk band was formed through these invisible threads of fate, united by music, community, and cultural roots.

When they arrived in Leicester, many met Dr Hu, the band’s founder, in truly surprising ways. Most came to his traditional Chinese medicine shop in the city centre simply to seek treatment for their health. Yet, they found themselves unexpectedly drawn in, not only by the healing herbs but also by the many musical instruments that filled the space: guzheng, erhu, guitar, piano, keyboard, hulusi, and bamboo flute. The shop felt more like a warm, creative home than a clinic. Dr Hu’s friendly and passionate personality made everyone feel welcome. Slowly, those who came as patients discovered a shared love of music that brought them together. Their health improved, thanks not only to the medicine but also to the joy and connection found through music.

What started as a chance meeting in a medicine shop soon became something more. People with different backgrounds, ages, and professions found themselves united by Chinese folk music in the Midlands. Some had formal training; others were beginners. All shared a deep love for the sounds and stories of their culture.

Together, they formed Across the Strings & Voices, the Midlands’ only Chinese folk music band. Since then, the group has performed at local festivals, community events, and Chinese New Year celebrations across Leicester and nearby cities. Their music is a blend of traditional Chinese instruments and some Western ones, reflecting both their roots and their new home.

For this band, music is more than performance. It is a way to connect people, build community, and celebrate cultural heritage. Through their songs, they hope to bring warmth, understanding, and joy to audiences from all walks of life.
