Across the Strings and Voices – Introducing the Midlands’ Only Chinese Folk Band
Across the Strings & Voices is a not-for-profit Chinese folk band based in Leicester, UK. Formed in 2004 by a group of Chinese music enthusiasts, our band aims to share the richness of Chinese traditional music, promote cultural exchange, and support mental wellbeing through performance and community engagement.
We are proud to be the only Chinese folk band in the Midlands, performing in Leicester, Warwickshire, London and beyond. Our music ranges from classics like Jasmine Flower and Festival Overture to cross-cultural fusions such as Scarborough Fair and Greensleeves, blending Chinese and Western folk traditions.
At Across the Strings & Voices, we believe in ‘the Art of Connection’ — that music is a language everyone understands, one that brings together cultures, feelings, and people. We perform with traditional Chinese string instruments like erhu, guzheng, and pipa, enriched by the sound of flute, drums, and warm harmonised voices. As a Chinese folk band based in the UK, we blend traditional and local instruments, such as the violin and guitar, to connect our cultural roots with our home in the Midlands.
Our members include local residents, teachers, doctors, and international students. Around 60% have formal music training, but we also welcome beginners who love Chinese music and want to be part of a community. Our songs are inspired by stories, places, and friendships — all part of a musical journey we share.
Even though we represent a small ethnic group, we believe that music and art bring people closer, beyond language and background. Through free or low-cost performances, we build understanding, foster inclusivity, and contribute to the cultural life of the communities we reach.
We warmly welcome anyone who shares our passion to join us, no matter where you come from. Music has the power to turn strangers into family.
